The Problem

Canton Network delivers institutional-grade privacy, atomic settlement, and composable smart contracts through Daml. But there's a fundamental challenge: Canton's architecture means smart contracts cannot hold assets directly. Assets can only be held by a party- and today, most applications rely on a single party to custody funds and authorise transactions.

For developers building any kind of infrastructure - vaults, lending protocols, bridges, tokenized assets - this creates real problems:

• Custody risk - A single operator controls all assets. If compromised, everything is at risk.
• Operational fragility - If one node goes down, your entire application stops.
• Trust bottleneck - Institutions must place full trust in a single entity, limiting adoption.

The Solution: Decentralized Party (DecParty)

DecParty is BitSafe's standardized tooling for creating, configuring, and managing decentralized parties on Canton - groups of independent nodes that collectively control an application or asset under an n-of-m signing threshold.

Instead of one operator making decisions, a quorum of participants must agree. Instead of one node holding custody, multiple nodes share responsibility.

How It Works

1. Configure your decentralized party with your desired membership and threshold (e.g., 3-of-5)
2. Install the DecParty software alongside your existing Canton participant node
3. Automate - attestation is fully automated; no manual signing required
4. Govern - any action (asset movements, configuration changes, smart contract executions) requires threshold approval

As long as a quorum of members is online, the application continues to function. No single member can act unilaterally. No single node going down causes system downtime.

Think of it as automated multi-sig for Canton: multi-party authorization without manual coordination.
